Aurangabad is a famous tourist destination which attracts tourists across the world. It was declared as Tourism Capital of Maharashtra by Government in 2010. The city got its name for being the erstwhile capital of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in the 17th century AD. Tourists visit Aurangabad for UNESCO World Heritage Sites- Ajanta and Ellora Caves. Also there are other attractions like Bibi Ka Maqbara, Daulatabad Fort and Ghrushneshwar Temple.
Ajanta Caves is a home to approximately 30 rock-cut Buddhist Caves which date from the 2nd century BCE to about 480 CE. The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures described as among the finest surviving examples of ancient Indian art, particularly expressive paintings that present emotion through gesture, pose and form.
The Ellora Caves houses a total of 34 caves open to public and is one of the largest rock-cut monastery-temple cave complexes in the world, featuring Buddhist, Hindu and Jain monuments, and artwork, dating from the 600–1000 CE period.
Bibi ka Maqbara has a striking resemblance to Taj Mahal and it was built by Aurangzeb in the 17th Century in the memory of his wife.
Daulatabad Fort, also known as Devagiri, is a historical fort and was the capital of the Yadava dynasty, for a brief time the capital of the Delhi Sultanate, and later a secondary capital of the Ahmadnagar Sultanate.
Lonar Lake, also known as Lonar crater, is a notified National Geo-heritage Monument, saline, soda lake, located in Buldhana district near Aurangabad. This Crater is said to be the result of a meteorite impact that occurred between 35,000 and 50,000 years ago. The impact of meteor is so high that this crater was creating 1.83 kilometers in diameter and 150 meters deep. The water in the lake is both saline and alkaline.
