When you talk about heritage side of Karnataka, the first place that will come to your mind would be Hampi. But do you that Karnataka has lot more to offer in terms of Heritage & architecture?
Yes, we are talking about none other than the Belur –Halebid Temples of Hoysala Dynasty. They are famous worldwide for their fine carvings & sculptors.
Belur & Halebid are small twin temple cities located in Hassan District of Karnataka. They were capital cities of Hoysala Dynasty. These temples take you back to 12th Century & give a glimpse of Hindu temple art. The hoysalas followed Dravidian style of architecture & they played an important role in the development of art, religion & architecture in South India.
Belur temple, known as Chennakesava temple is considered as the most beautiful temple from the 92 Hoysala temples in Karnataka & is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The exterior of the temple is covered with a variety of intricately-carved sculptures and friezes. The interior contains number of ornate pillars.
Halebid (also pronounced as Hale’beedu) literally means ‘the old city’. The city got the name “Halebidu” because it was damaged and deserted into “old capital” after being ransacked and looted twice by Islamic forces of the Delhi Sultanate in the 14th-century.
Main attractions in Halebid are Hoysaleshwara & Kedareshwara temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are two Nandi’s (Shiva’s Bull) here which are monolithic.
Shravanbelgola is an important Jain pilgrim center with 17m tall statue of Lord Gomateshwara which is called Bahubali statue as its prime attraction. This statue is believed to be world’s largest monolithic statue.
All these three sites namely Belur-Halebid-Shranvanbelagola are being proposed as UNESCO world heritage sites.
